The paidbypixels.com FAQ page

What is PaidByPixels.com all about?

We've had a dream for years to take a year long road trip in a motorhome, and hit 50 states in 50 weeks, so we're going to go for it! We'll be producing GeekBrief.TV from the road. First, we'll head to Alaska. From there, the goal is to wind our way down through the Lower 48. Hawaii, will of course, require a plane ride. Along the way, we’ll have challenges and frustrations. We’ll meet interesting people and we’ll see amazingly beautiful things. We’ll have lights, cameras and redundant broadband solutions so we can share the experience with new and old friends all over the world.

When we announced our goal, people started asking how they can participate and donate towards the project. That's when we came up with PaidbyPixels.

Alex Tew's Million Dollar Homepage came to mind, except that we don't need nearly a million dollars. We purchased his script, cut the value in half and gave 10% of the ad space to Heifer International (our favorite charity).

Who's "we"? Who's behind The Big Trip?

We're Cali Lewis and Neal Campbell. We produce an online video show (or video podcast) about technology called GeekBrief.TV. It's 3-5 minutes of Shiny, Happy Tech News, and it's released four days a week.

Oh, and "we" also includes our two dogs, Sydney and Zoe. They're both female Chihuahuas. Here's a picture of Sydney and a picture of Zoe. Who knows, our 2 year old nephew might even hitch a ride for a week!

How much does it cost to buy pixels?

The minimum pixel ad is 10X10 and the price is $50. You can purchase as many 10x10 blocks for your ad. When you scroll over a pixel ad, a larger more descriptive ad appears and the pixels link to a Website.

For each block you buy, we will put one ad in rotation on our network of websites (www.geekbrief.tv, www.icali.tv, www.dearcali.com, www.nealcampbell.com, and www.carnivore.tv). If you buy one block, you'll get one ad placed in the rotation. If you buy 50 blocks, you'll get 50 ads placed in the rotation.

PodShow is working with us to get advertising support for the shows we'll be producing on the road, but we wanted to make some ad opportunities accessible to everyone.

If you have any questions, email me (cali [at] bigtrip dot tv).

What will you do with my money?

Your support for The Big Trip will be going to help pay for every aspect of the trip. This includes the RV, insurance, fuel (major cost!), campground costs, equipment for making the RV into a studio, etc.

Why are some of the images bigger than others when I mouse over an ad?

When you upload your image, you can upload a larger image than the space you're buying, up to 250 kilobytes. The image will automatically be sized to fit the pixels you purchase. When someone mouses over your ad, they will see the larger, original ad pop up.

The difference between the smaller and larger mouse-overs is the difference in size of the original image that person uploaded.
